DC's second-warmest year on record ends with coldest December since 2010 ... of the nation resulted from a fairly persistent, bulging ridge of high pressure over Alaska, which sent the jet stream toppling south over the Lower 48. This is something we saw frequently in the cold 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 winters. This pattern continues to drive colder weather into early January, too.

Phony prophets painting an alternate global warming reality? The Anchorage Daily News reports that Alaska's "cool late-summer weather over the central Arctic Ocean helped preserve sea ice, slowing its melting enough to rank this year's annual ice minimum as only the eighth lowest in the satellite record, far from the worst it's been." Record cold. Record snow.
