When did Alaska become a state? The Alaska Statehood Act was signed by President Eisenhower on July 7, 1958, allowing for Alaska to become the forty-ninth state on January 3, 1959. The Russian Empire once controlled Alaska but sold it to the United States in 1867 and it became a US military district called the Department of Alaska.
